What is a potential title?

  • High Tea — Guide to the Perfect afternoon
  • Tea House

Make a list of important words, themes and ideas in the book.

  • Calm
  • light
  • Simple
  • Luxurious
  • Warm

Make a list of visuals that come to mind in the book. How will you acquire these visuals?

  • Teacup
  • Three-layered tray stacked on each other
  • Food items
  • Layering with colors
  • Abstracted illustrations with linework

Who is the audience that you are trying to reach with this communication? (age, interest, nationality, life experience, etc)

I am trying to make this book a household item, which means that it will be a book that sits either on a coffee table in the living room or the dining room. Therefore, the audience should be people of any nationality who are interested in baking and relaxation, who are at home and looking for something to do.

If not for cooking, the pleasant illustration in the book can also just be something to flip through when sitting at home in an afternoon.

What information will draw them in? In other words, what is the “hook”?

The hook of this book will mostly be the illustrations on the cover. It presents a wide variety of food items that will look delicious and simple. The calming colors will also be a hook.

What emotions are present in the book that an audience might respond to?

  • Calmness
  • Curiosity
  • Peacefulness
  • Warmth

What visual approaches are you considering? (Feel free to sketch on a separate piece of paper/sketchbook).

Mood board:

I sectioned my recepie book into four chapters for the four levels of an afternoon tea. At the top are desserts and sweets, the second level is baked goods, the third level is sandwiches and the last one is tea.

For each page, I decided to create simple illustrations while tracing off of images. Here are all the illustrations for the pages:

Then I began to assemble the pages. I started with the menu, starting with the overall color palette of the book and using them as abstract curves to make the page flow into the next.

Using these layers to indicate as chapters, I made each chapter as a whole spread and had one recipe per page. Each spread the layout is varied and organized in a different way, but overall the color scheme and the way that the food is illustrated are the same.

In the first spread, the large flow of color is used to separate the ingredients section from directions.

As seen here, guidelines are used as a grid system as well as keeping the text aligned in a spread.

The font I selected for the title is a very thin and simple san serif font called Geniso. It gives a very modern and abstract feeling to the book. For the body text, I choose the typeface Futura as it is in sync with the title and also very easy to read.

Finally, the cover page and end page are made to connect the layers back with each other, representing all the chapters of the book. The cover is very minimal with the title and text, putting the emphasis on the food and the overall emotion rather than presenting the information through text.
